Instructions

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) data portal, provides access to the World's largest collection of online records for biological specimens and observations. The Canadian Biodiversity Information Facility (CBIF) in cooperation with GBIF provides since April 2005 Web Map Service (WMS) access to these records. The mapping application lets users map multiple biological layers (taxa) from the GBIF biological data portal.

The plotted points for each scientific name can have different colors, sizes and shapes. Obviously, no new points will be plotted if a scientific name is input that is mispelled, does not occur or does not have point coordinates associated with records. To start over with a new blank map follow the *Clear all taxa* link in the lower lefthand corner.

Plotted points are entered in RGB (Red, Green, Blue) values. There are many web sites providing the 216 *Web Safe* color charts. Below are a few color examples:

  • Black: 0 0 0
  • Blue: 102 0 255
  • Purple: 204 102 255
  • Red: 250 0 0
  • Yellow: 255 255 0
